Job Star Central

Geared towards California job seekers, but still very useful for its information about planning, résumé preparation, interviewing, salaries, and other relevant topics. Well organized and thorough.

 

Occupational Outlook Handbook

This classic career reference updated annually by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics is now on-line. Read occupational summaries ranging from accounting to zoology.

 

CareerBuilder

Check out a wide variety of relevant and interesting articles, including some on interviewing that are particularly strong. The site offers a job search service for those looking for work nationwide or beyond. We have no information about its results.

Not so much about getting the right job, more about excelling once you get it or making your own enterprise better. This author has contributed ideas and impetus to CareerSmiths. The writing is sometimes over-the top, but still worthwhile.

Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce

Very extensive city-sponsored site covering many public resources such as Monona Terrace. Access sites for public schools as well as higher education institutions. It also gives info on transportation / parking and access to administrative offices and elected officials.

 

Dane County

Good background on county government issues, e.g. land use, commuter rail service, and budget. See commission reports and press releases; also, the Clerk's home page for all basic election info.

 

DANE Net

Locally focused volunteer site that offers resources on general interest topics ranging from health to youth & domestic abuse. Connect with community and neighborhood organizations. Some are quite complete, e.g. the City of Stoughton.

 

Living Wages for a Stronger Community

Information regarding history and status of efforts of the living wage movement to more constructively use public dollars. It has gained much local acceptance and relevance to our local economy.

Innovative self-help resource for people wishing to independently buy and sell their homes. For-sale-by-owner listings and open houses. Info on financing legal details and many very useful community links with a family focus.

 

Community Shares of Wisconsin

A Wisconsin-focused alternative to the United Way. It tends to support smaller, innovative, and some might say more progressive organizations. The site offers agency links, a calandar of upcoming events, volunteer opportunities, and information about activities that you might want to support.
